  1. Referendum author for Sustainability will be joining the meeting to present (3:00-3:30pm)
    1. Guest Derek Martin
    2. Referendum statement
      1. Budget
    3. Outcome - SFAC to form an official opinion that is part of the ballot statement
    4. Sample statement from 2021:
      1. “The Student Fee Advisory Committee (SFAC) supports the extension and subsequent increases because it will allow for the Sustainability Office to continue operations and increase student leadership in sustainability achievements in and outside of the UC Santa Cruz campus. We acknowledge that if this fee is not passed the services they offer will be further reduced.”

Charlene - first sentence is wordy and possibly rewriting it

Marshall - In the ballot it says Student Fee advisory committee in the opener so saying it again in the statement is a little bit redundant

  • Elizabeth - is it appropriate to link the achievements of the SO on and off campus link students to a summary of what the office does
  • Brief and short: If you would like to learn more about the Sustainability Office plan click here.
  • Charlene - it would be helpful to summarize in words so students can read it really quickly
  • Marshall - on the SO office page UCSC sustainability office page it gives brief summaries of the different initiatives they are working on and we can put one of them in the statement
  • There is a link to the sustainability office on the official agenda
  • Charlene - Table this discussion for next week in regard to time
  • SFAC members should look this over and come up with ideas for next week for updates for the statement
  • CSF spring quarter May 6 and 7th
  • UCOP - Judith might be coming the UCOP
  • For the CSF meeting anyone from SFAC is invited to come - Charlene wants to have a list of names by this saturday
  • Either email Charlene or write oyur name in the agenda
      1. Motion for edits and new statement to or not to support

The sustainability office was founded in 2005

Several different teams of students

Raising awareness of the sustainability we can use on campus and external practices we can do

UCSC’s sustainability efforts have been recognized by many groups

Undergrad student fee assessed each quarter fee starts at $3.00 and increase by 3%

Efforts to engage the campus in sustainability and social justice work

Annual sustainability and social justice inter-organizational retreat

25 paid undergrad student positions

Professional development opportunities for students

2010-2020 What did Measure 45 fund

Student staff pay and benefits were the most of the budget.

Impact the fee measure will have over the span of 10 years

1000 students per year for the retreat

Funding approx 250 paid student positions in the sustainability office

Professional development opportunities for students such as funding to attend conferences

What is the value of paid employment in the sustainability office

Professional development knowledge of current and best sustainability practices

Inner-org retreat

Alumni panel

Speakers

Student funded through the fee measure

(food, lodging, speaker fees)

80% of undergrads voted Yes on the SO fee in 2022

23.5% of undergraduates voted overall in the election

Only 1.5% short of the number of students needed to pass the measure

Would we have access to the slideshow?

Yes it is being sent to Charlene’s email and she will share it with the rest of SFAC

If there are any questions feel free to ask Derek at any point.

Whenever there is a fee measure, they present it to SFAC and SFAC presents verbiage and an opinion for students to view and get their own opinion from.

Basic needs do the food pantries, not sustainability

The SO hasn't had a fee since 2020 so they haven't really been active on campus

Derek goes around to every college and explains to everyone about the compost and recycling

1-7 can be recycled on campus

2021 Presentation has all of their funding projects and what they do through their office.

  2. rating worksheet Summary
    1. Recap total of ALL amount funded thus far $739,458,
    • Total EMH funding is $90,000.
  • Amount funded: $24,557
  • Positive remaining EMH $65,443
    • Total SSF + M7 funding is $710, 384.
  • Amount funded: $714,901 from SSF + M7
  • Negative $4,517 in M7 and SSF.

Lucy has looked over the proposals and sent over some proposals that can be moved from SSF and M7 to EMH

  • #70 SUA's student advocate's office. That is similar to case management offered through Slug Support and we did fund the Slug Support Manager/RC position.
    • $20,000 For staff voted for it to come from SSF and M7 and if we move it, we can give out more money instead of trim. - money for staff stipends
    • There was not a direct stipulation for what the money has to be used for but the number was most likely derived from the staff budget.
    • $43,493 is now the number that is left in EMH
  • #59 - Graduate student wellness weeks - this is directly related to wellness
    • Wellness kits, Graduate student commons
    • The SUA’s office will offer support as well
    • Before, EMH had its own committee to review for how money is spent
    • 1,950 for wellness kits
  • Gabrielle motions to fund proposal 70 with $20,000 and 59 with $1,950
  • Jhertau seconds
  • $46,507 is the amount of money funded by EMH. EMH is in the positive by $43,493
  • $692,951 is the number of money we funded for SSF and M7 in the positive by $17,433
  • EMH has limitations for what needs to be funded
  1. Possible suggestions for allocating rest of EMH funding $43,493:
        1. Divide remaining M7 SSF evenly to all proposals based on Lucy’s and Lydia’s recommendations that cleared up some M7+SSF money and swapped it to EMH?
        2. Does anyone want to revisit any proposals denied? For reasons outside of re-applying to SFAC funding call or class 1 or 2 inappropriate.
          1. If extra M7 + SSF

Re-address #53 Non academic accommodation from DRC (charlene looked deeper to see that programing would go to external drc events so wouldn't actually fall under class , when reviewing for letter)

Re-address #12 Search tool for career website, we didn't write a strong deny reason in motion for letter

Re-adress #36 NameCoach, we didn't write a strong deny reason in motion for letter

Divide the remaining SSF and M7 money by all of the proposals and give them a little more money

Or we can go back to the proposals we denied and see if we want to fund them since they are considered more unclear.

Proposal 12 - we thought it was far reached Hire a single student to move everything to word press, and they have a recurring cost for WordPress

Proposal 36 - Not having a major impact on students

Katie - Look at more of the student orgs - such as Fruitcake or Matchbox

Mel - since we do have the funds we might be able to fund Matchbox

Andy created a percentage that we funded through SFAC and suggests to look at funding and what we can funding to look back at what we might have not funded as much or has a low percentage

          1. If extra EMH

Readdress #40 GSA +GSC orientation

Re address #39 Amphitheater Student Production

GSA and GSC orientation proposals

Quarry amphitheater/Dean of students - mainly the maintenance and maintaining the quarry amphitheater and not with events

Stipulate - a blank number and stipulate that these funds are given towards programming and putting on events (Lydia suggests that it can be set in the letter for these funds to go to the students planning or working at events.

Fund equally or go one by one like what we are doing for these events

Jhertau - giving money to proposal 53 DRC

Lisa - funding slug support

Come up with 1 proposal each and why you think it should be funded

5 votes for option C to look at the proposals case by case and come up with one proposal each and why they should be funded

        1. Does anyone want to revisit any other proposals?
  1. What fee units do we want to write to? Based on Lisa’s presentation
  2. If time permits: Brainstorm future guests and topics
    1. Bringing in pro staff to discuss more in detail permanent ssf and where we get our amount from. week 5
    2. Bring in past units that submit proposals, preferably in spring.
    3. Increasepay by 1K to each or more, TBD
    4. Meeting with the Chancellor Cynthia Larive.
    5. Meeting with Vice Chancellor Akirah Bradley-Armstrong
  3. Adjournment
